Buflo General was selected as the only hospital in Western New York, and west of Albany, to perform the procedure initially. A team of surgeons performed the first two procedures last week, led by Dr.Vijay Iyer, medical director of cardiology atKaleida Healthand assistant professor of medicine at theUniversity at BufloSchool of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

According to Kaleida, aortic stenosis can be treated in a relatively healthy patient by medications. Surgery is the most effective treatment for patients who are not candidates for medication or for whom medication has ceased to work. But elderly patients with aortic stenosis and other serious health issues have been considered inoperable. These are the patients who will benefit most from TAVR, Iyer said in a prepared statement.
